Did you know that white vinegar can be used as a sustainable household cleaner? When Lauren Singer was an environmental studies major in college, she wasn’t sure how to be the change she wanted to see in the world. Then she discovered zero waste living. Four years later, Lauren has created only enough trash to fit inside a 16 ounce mason jar. Incredible!
Part of Lauren’s lifestyle includes making her own cleaning products, and she showed David and the whole Wonderama audience the recipe she uses for cleaning spray, shown below. Try it yourself and see what you think!
Vinegar works as a cleaning agent because it contains acetic acid. The reason why you shouldn’t let vinegar get in contact with your eyes (ouch!), acetic acid kills bacteria and helps dissolve deposits of dirt and minerals that build up in our homes.
Lauren Singer’s Signature Spray
Combine the following in a spray bottle:
- White vinegar
- Essential oil, such as lemon or lime
Happy cleaning! But it’s not all scrubbing and shining over at Lauren Singer’s house. She also has fun making her own make-up! Below are some of her favorite go-to makeup recipes with easily available ingredients:
- Toothpaste
- 2 tablespoons organic coconut oil
- 1 tablespoon baking soda
- 20 drops of organic essential oil (peppermint, spearmint, anise, cinnamon)
- Makeup remover
- Coconut oil– use about a teaspoon on your face, rub it in, and wipe it off with a washcloth
- Hand/Body scrub
- Coffee grounds– nature exfoliator, the caffeine has anti-inflammatory properties (use the grounds as a scrub after you’ve made coffee so as not to waste fresh grounds)
- Exfoliating mask
- 1 teaspoon baking soda mixed with a splash of water
- Lip scrub
- Organic sugar or coarsely ground salt
